How Brecon works

Brecon visitor guide

Aberhonddu

Brecon (Aberhonddu) is the Beacons cathedral town — cathedral and canal basin, Powys taxi table, mountain weather not sea. This guide covers how you arrive, eat, stay and get practical help — then links into the full pillar pages.

Tariff 1 flag £4.00 — about £6.00 for 2 miles (daytime). Official Brecon taxi fares

Getting here

Most visitors arrive by car; the nearest useful rail heads are Abergavenny or Merthyr Tydfil, then a taxi or bus into town. Cardiff Airport is closer than Manchester for most flights — pre-book private hire with luggage space.

The town centre to the cathedral and canal basin is a short hop.

Getting around

The centre is compact; the canal basin and cathedral sit a short walk from the high street. Hackney carriages use the Powys meter — the same table as Hay-on-Wye and Builth Wells, not a second fare.

Private hire must be pre-booked with a price agreed when you book — see the Brecon tariff page.

Eat

High street, cathedral and canal-basin independents. Saturday fills the market. FSA hygiene ratings run 0–5 — search the venue on food.gov.uk before you book.

Many cafes close by mid-afternoon. This is not a seaside sitting.

Stay

Town hotels and guest houses. Confirm breakfast, parking and cancellation on the venue's own site. Beacons weekends fill rooms.

Hay is the book-town stay on the same taxi table, not this canal basin.

If something breaks

Gas Safe before any gas or boiler work. Electrical jobs should leave a certificate. Highway skips on a public road need a Powys licence — the skip operator applies; confirm the current fee with the company.

Get scope and price in writing before walls open, especially on hillside streets toward the Beacons.

Do

The cathedral, canal basin and Beacons-edge walks are the core. Hay's book streets and Builth's showground are day trips on the same taxi table. This town is not the sea.

If you only have a weekend

Walk the cathedral and canal basin, eat once with a checkable FSA rating, and sleep in town if you can. Leave Sunday without treating Hay or Builth as this page.
