Cardiff guide

Most visitors arrive by train into Cardiff Central, by car on the M4, or via Cardiff Airport (Rhoose). The airport is outside the city — budget for a transfer, not a short walk.

Coach and rail both drop you close to the centre. Compare the official hackney tariff with a pre-booked private hire quote before you leave the terminal.

The centre, Castle, and Civic Centre are walkable. Buses cover suburbs and the Bay; for late evenings or bags, use a licensed taxi.

Hackney carriages use the council meter from ranks and street hails. Private hire must be pre-booked with a price agreed when you book — see the Cardiff tariff page for the published hackney table.

Pontcanna and Canton for independents, the centre for convenience, the Bay for waterfront tables. FSA hygiene ratings run 0–5 — search the venue on food.gov.uk before you book.

Where we have checked menus, mains often sit around £16–£28 — confirm hours and prices on the day. Many cafes close by mid-afternoon; book food pubs for Sunday roasts.

Independent hotels and B&Bs cluster near the centre, Pontcanna and the Bay. Confirm breakfast, parking and cancellation on the venue's own site.

Rugby and concert weekends push rates up — book early if dates are fixed.

Gas Safe registration is mandatory before any gas or boiler work — check the engineer's ID card on gassaferegister.co.uk. Electrical work should leave you with an EIC or EICR certificate.

Get scope and price in writing before walls open. Evening call-outs usually cost more than daytime visits.
