How Chepstow works
Chepstow visitor guide
Cas-gwent
Chepstow (Cas-gwent) sits under the racecourse where the Wye meets the Severn border — castle, town gate and race days. This guide covers how you arrive, eat, stay and get practical help — then links into the full pillar pages. It is not Newport, and it is not a beach town.
Getting here
Most visitors arrive by train into Chepstow, or by car on the M48/M4 and down to the town gate. Cardiff Airport and Bristol are both long private-hire runs — agree the price; the Monmouthshire hackney table is not an airport quote.
Race days clog the roads around the course. Leave extra time.
Getting around
The station to the town gate and castle is a short, steep hop. The racecourse is a separate drop. Hackney carriages use the Monmouthshire meter from ranks and street hails — not Newport's table.
Private hire must be pre-booked with a price agreed when you book — see the Chepstow tariff page.
Eat
High Street and the town gate hold the independents. Race evenings fill nearby rooms. FSA hygiene ratings run 0–5 — search the venue on food.gov.uk before you book.
Many cafes close by mid-afternoon. This is not a seaside strip.
Stay
Town-gate hotels suit castle visitors and race weekends. Confirm breakfast, parking and cancellation on the venue's own site. Border lets may sit in England — check the postcode.
Race meetings push rates up — book early if dates are fixed.
If something breaks
Gas Safe before any gas or boiler work. Electrical jobs should leave a certificate. Highway skips on a public road need a Monmouthshire permit — £108 per 4 weeks from April 2026; English-side addresses may need a different council.
Get scope and price in writing before walls open.
Do
The castle, town walls and Wye banks are the core. Racecourse meetings reshape the town — plan food and taxis around the last race. This is not a boat harbour.
Cadw tickets live on Cadw's own site.
If you only have a weekend
Walk the castle and gate, eat once with a checkable FSA rating, and either go to the races or stay off the A48 when they empty. Leave Sunday without treating Newport or the beach as this town.
