How Monmouth works
Monmouth visitor guide
Trefynwy
Monmouth (Trefynwy) is the Wye border market town — Monnow Bridge and Agincourt Square, Monmouthshire taxi table. This guide covers how you arrive, eat, stay and get practical help — then links into the full pillar pages.
Getting here
Most visitors arrive by car, or by train into May Hill. Cardiff or Bristol airports are long private-hire runs — pre-book with luggage space.
The station to the square and bridge is a short hop.
Getting around
Monnow Bridge and Agincourt Square sit a short walk from each other. Hackney carriages use the Monmouthshire meter — the same table as Chepstow and Abergavenny, not a second fare.
Private hire must be pre-booked with a price agreed when you book — see the Monmouth tariff page.
Eat
Bridge and square independents. Saturday fills the market. FSA hygiene ratings run 0–5 — search the venue on food.gov.uk before you book.
Many cafes close by mid-afternoon. Chepstow is the racecourse sitting, not this Wye market.
Stay
Wye-border hotels. Confirm breakfast, parking and cancellation on the venue's own site. Saturday fills the streets.
Chepstow racecourse rooms are a different product on the same taxi table.
If something breaks
Gas Safe before any gas or boiler work. Electrical jobs should leave a certificate. Highway skips on a public road need a Monmouthshire permit — £108 per 4 weeks from April 2026. Confirm which council if the drop is over the English border.
Get scope and price in writing before walls open, especially on Wye streets.
Do
Monnow Bridge, Agincourt Square and the Wye are the core. Chepstow's racecourse is a day trip on the same taxi table. This town is not the coast.
If you only have a weekend
Walk the bridge and square, eat once with a checkable FSA rating, and sleep in town if you can. Leave Sunday without treating Chepstow or Abergavenny as this page.
