How Penarth works

Penarth visitor guide

Penarth

Penarth looks across the barrage to Cardiff Bay — a cliff-top Victorian suburb; Vale of Glamorgan taxi table, not Cardiff's. This guide covers how you arrive, eat, stay and get practical help — then links into the full pillar pages.

Tariff 1 flag £3.10 — about £7.30 for 2 miles (daytime). Official Penarth taxi fares

Getting here

Most visitors arrive by rail to Penarth station or by car. Cardiff Airport is closer than Manchester for most flights — pre-book private hire with luggage space.

The station to the Esplanade is a short, steep hop.

Getting around

The Esplanade and cliff sit a short hop from the station. Hackney carriages use the Vale of Glamorgan meter — not Cardiff's table.

Private hire must be pre-booked with a price agreed when you book — see the Penarth tariff page.

Eat

Esplanade independents. FSA hygiene ratings run 0–5 — search the venue on food.gov.uk before you book.

Many cafes close by mid-afternoon. Cardiff Bay is a different product on a different taxi table.

Stay

Esplanade hotels. Confirm breakfast, parking and cancellation on the venue's own site. Saturday fills the cliff streets.

Cardiff Bay rooms are a different product on a different taxi table.

If something breaks

Gas Safe before any gas or boiler work. Electrical jobs should leave a certificate. Highway skips on a public road need a Vale of Glamorgan licence — we have not found a dated published Vale skip fee, so we do not quote a figure.

Get scope and price in writing before walls open, especially on Esplanade streets.

Do

The Esplanade, cliff and barrage hop are the core. Cardiff Bay is a day trip on a different taxi table. This suburb is not a harbour.

If you only have a weekend

Walk the Esplanade and cliff, eat once with a checkable FSA rating, and sleep in town if you can. Leave Sunday without treating Cardiff Bay as this page.
