How Porth works

Porth visitor guide

Porth sits where the two Rhonddas meet — a junction town on the RCT taxi table, not a harbour despite the name. This guide covers how you arrive, eat, stay and get practical help — then links into the full pillar pages.

Tariff 1 flag £4.00 — about £6.00 for 2 miles (daytime). Official Porth taxi fares

Getting here

Most visitors arrive by train into Porth, or by car. Cardiff Airport is closer than Manchester for most flights — pre-book private hire with luggage space.

The station to the shopping street is a short hop.

Getting around

The shopping street and station sit a short walk from each other. Hackney carriages use the RCT meter — the same table as Pontypridd, not a second fare.

Private hire must be pre-booked with a price agreed when you book — see the Porth tariff page.

Eat

Junction-street independents. Saturday fills the street. FSA hygiene ratings run 0–5 — search the venue on food.gov.uk before you book.

Many cafes close by mid-afternoon. This is not a harbour sitting despite the name. Pontypridd is Taff Street.

Stay

Junction-town hotels. Confirm breakfast, parking and cancellation on the venue's own site. Saturday fills the street.

Pontypridd Taff rooms are a different product on the same taxi table. This is not a harbour stay.

Stay in Porth →

If something breaks

Gas Safe before any gas or boiler work. Electrical jobs should leave a certificate. Highway skips on a public road need an RCT permit — £41.60 for 14 days on the skip-permit page.

Get scope and price in writing before walls open, especially on hillside streets.

Do

The shopping street and station are the core. This is not a harbour despite the name. Pontypridd is a day trip on the same taxi table.

If you only have a weekend

Walk the shopping street, eat once with a checkable FSA rating, and sleep in town if you can. Leave Sunday without treating Pontypridd or Treorchy as this page.
