How Swansea works

Swansea guide

Abertawe

Swansea sits between city centre, the Bay, and the Mumbles/Gower edge. Trains, the M4, and coastal roads all matter. This guide covers how the town works — then links into Eat, Stay, Trades and fares.

Tariff 1 flag £2.50 — about £7.00 for 2 miles (daytime). Full tariff

Getting here

Rail into Swansea station puts you near the centre. Drivers use the M4; coaches stop in town. Cardiff Airport is a longer transfer than for Cardiff itself — check rail or booked car options.

Gower and Mumbles need a bus, car or taxi from the centre.

Swansea taxi fares

Getting around

The centre and Maritime Quarter are walkable. SA1 and the Bay are short hops; Mumbles is a coastal run. Buses cover most corridors; licensed taxis cover evenings and luggage.

The Swansea hackney tariff page has the published meter table — private hire uses the price you agree when you book.

Eat

Independents cluster in the centre, Uplands/Sketty and along the waterfront. FSA ratings are 0–5 — check before you order. Many cafes close mid-afternoon.

For takeaways, check hygiene rating and a menu with prices; collection usually arrives hotter than app delivery.

Eating in Swansea

Stay

City hotels, Mumbles guest houses and Gower camping or cottages serve different weekends. Confirm what "sleeps 4" means (beds vs sofa beds) and whether breakfast is included.

Gower day trips from a Mumbles base need parking confirmed before you book.

Stay in Swansea

If something breaks

Same UK rules as everywhere — Gas Safe before gas work, competent-person scheme for electrics. Get quotes in writing and match the engineer's ID card to the online register.

Coastal properties still need tanking in wet rooms and insurance before tree work.

Trades in Swansea

Do

Swansea Bay promenade, the marina and a Gower day (when transport allows) are the usual anchors. National Trust and Cadw properties around Gower publish opening times on their own sites.

Watersports and coasteering need swim ability and instructor ratios checked before you pay.

Things to do in Swansea

If you only have a weekend

Base in the centre or Mumbles. One bay walk, one Gower half-day if weather allows, and one meal with a confirmed menu. Use taxi fares if you are moving after dark.
