How Tenby works
Tenby guide
Dinbych-y-pysgod
Tenby is a small walled Pembrokeshire town: harbour, beaches, and a seasonal pulse. This guide covers how a weekend works — eat, stay, getting in and around — without wading through directories.
Getting here
Rail to Tenby (branch line) drops you near town; many visitors drive the A478/A477. Coaches serve the coast in season. Cardiff Airport is a long transfer — plan it, or use rail via Carmarthen/Swansea.
Parking fills fast in peak summer; walk once you are in the walls if you can.
Getting around
The walled town and harbour are walkable. North and South beaches are short walks; Caldey Island needs the boat. Buses and taxis cover out-of-town cottages and evening runs.
Pembrokeshire taxi rules sit under the county — see the Tenby fares page for the published picture.
Eat
Harbour and town independents carry most of the visitor trade. Seasonal hours change fast — confirm before you walk across town. Cafes and pubs matter as much as dinner rooms on a wet Pembrokeshire day.
Peak August fills restaurants — book ahead where you can.
Stay
Hotels, B&Bs, cottages and camping around Tenby and nearby villages peak in July–August. Self-catering often uses Saturday changeover — confirm key collection and cleaning fees.
Shoulder season is quieter and often kinder on rates.
If something breaks
Coastal properties need Gas Safe checks and public liability insurance before tree work. Roof and bathroom jobs book up in summer — allow lead time.
Get written scope before scaffolding goes up.
Do
Town walls, harbour, Castle Hill and the beaches are the core. Caldey Island boats and coastal path stretches depend on weather and season — check operator timetables.
Boat trips sell out in August — book tickets before you park.
If you only have a weekend
Arrive, walk the walls and harbour, swim or stroll a beach, eat once with a confirmed menu, and sleep somewhere with clear parking rules. Leave Sunday with sand in the car — not a half-finished attractions checklist.
