What a plumber or boiler call-out should cost in Wales

There is no official Welsh call-out price. Ask what the visit includes before they travel. If the job is gas, the engineer must be on the Gas Safe Register for that work.

There is no official Welsh call-out tariff for plumbers. The useful number is not a national average — it is what this visit includes before anyone leaves the yard.

For gas — boiler, fire, cooker, gas pipework — the person must be on the Gas Safe Register for those categories. A “plumber” title is not enough.

Ask these three things first

1. Call-out vs first hour. Some firms treat the call-out as travel plus the first 30–60 minutes. Others charge a call-out and then labour. Get that in one sentence. 2. Parts and VAT. Is the figure including VAT? Are parts extra? 3. Daytime vs out of hours. Evening, weekend and bank-holiday rates are higher. Confirm the premium before they set off.

If they will not say those three things, do not book an emergency on a handshake.

What published averages are (and are not)

Capital on Tap’s 2026 UK Trade Report (Google Keyword Planner, April 2026) put plumber as the most-searched UK trade, at 180,370 average monthly searches, with heating engineer at 48,900. Their earnings table, from Hamuch rates, put a national plumber around £42 an hour and a heating engineer around £43.

That is a UK average, not a Cardiff quote, and not a 2am boiler visit. Treat directory “from £X” pages the same way: marketing bands, not a contract.

Planned vs panic

  • Annual boiler service is planned work. Ask for a written scope and a Gas Safe number. Local Ladder’s August 2026 Google Ads pull put UK “boiler service” at 18,100 searches a month, rising to 27,100 in October 2025 when the heating comes on.
  • No heat, leak, or smell of gas is a different job. Smell of gas: open windows, do not use electrical switches, and call the National Gas Emergency number 0800 111 999 before you ring a tradesman.

After the visit

Keep the invoice and any certificate. Landlords need a gas safety record. Warranties often need proof of an annual service.

If a listing looks wrong or a firm no longer covers your town, report an update.

Common questions

Does a plumber have to be Gas Safe?
For gas — boiler, fire, cooker, pipework — yes. A general plumber title is not enough. Check gassaferegister.co.uk for the right categories.
Is the call-out fee the whole bill?
Often not. Some firms fold the first hour into the call-out; others charge travel, then labour, then parts. Ask which it is before they set off.
Why is an evening boiler visit more expensive?
Out-of-hours and weekend rates are higher because the engineer is not on a planned round. Confirm the premium before you book.
