How Holyhead works
Holyhead visitor guide
Caergybi
Holyhead (Caergybi) is the Irish-ferry port on Holy Island — terminal, breakwater and station, Isle of Anglesey taxi table, not Beaumaris's castle green and not a quiet sailing village. This guide covers how you arrive, eat, stay and get practical help — then links into the full pillar pages.
Getting here
Most visitors arrive by train into Holyhead, by car on the A55, or off an Irish sailing. Manchester and Liverpool airports are closer than Cardiff for most flights — pre-book private hire with luggage space.
The station to the ferry terminal is a short hop.
Getting around
The centre is compact; port roads fill when a sailing is in. Hackney carriages use the Isle of Anglesey meter — the same table as Beaumaris, Llangefni and Benllech, not a second fare.
Private hire must be pre-booked with a price agreed when you book — see the Holyhead tariff page.
Eat
Ferry-terminal and town-centre independents. Sailings fill tables. FSA hygiene ratings run 0–5 — search the venue on food.gov.uk before you book.
Many cafes close by mid-afternoon. Beaumaris is the castle-green sitting, not this port.
Stay
Port hotels and town guest houses for ferry nights. Confirm breakfast, parking and cancellation on the venue's own site.
Camping may sit on Holy Island — Benllech is the east-coast caravan strip on the same taxi table.
If something breaks
Gas Safe before any gas or boiler work. Electrical jobs should leave a certificate. Highway skips on a public road need an Isle of Anglesey permit — a registered skip company applies on your behalf.
Get scope and price in writing before walls open, especially on port-road access.
Do
The breakwater and Holy Island walks are the core. Beaumaris castle-green is a different Anglesey day on the same taxi table. This town is a working ferry harbour, not a quiet sailing village.
If you only have a weekend
Walk the breakwater, eat once with a checkable FSA rating, and either sleep in town for a sailing or leave without treating Beaumaris or Benllech as this page.
