Breakdown vs recovery in Wales
Source: The Highway Code — breakdowns · Checked: 2026-09-08 · Wales
Breakdown cover and recovery are different products. A national club patrol trying to restart the car is not the same as a local truck taking it to a garage.
Breakdown
Someone tries to repair at the roadside. If they cannot, the policy should say what happens next — a tow home, a tow to a nominated garage, or a call-out you pay extra for.
Recovery
A tow. Ask the destination and the price before the truck moves. This is not an MOT, and it is not capped at £54.85.
Local vs national
A garage recovery chapter on this site names firms where we have them — example recovery in Cardiff. A club membership is a contract with that club. Neither is the other.
Rural A-roads and mountain passes (see Pen y Pass) are where “we’ll be there in 40 minutes” becomes a long wait. Say where the car actually is.
Common questions
- What is the difference between breakdown and recovery?
- Breakdown cover usually means a patrol trying to repair at the roadside. Recovery means a truck takes the car — home, to a garage, or onward. Read which you bought.
- Does a local garage recovery use the MOT cap?
- No. Recovery is a commercial tow, not an MOT. Ask the destination and the price before the truck moves.
