Pen-y-Pass, Snowdon, and how not to waste the day
Source: Eryri — Pen y Pass car park · Checked: 2026-09-08 · Wales
The day on Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is usually lost in the car park, not on the path. Pen y Pass is the start of the Pyg Track and the Miners’ Track. It is small. In season you pre-book. Turning up is how people spend the morning in a lay-by they should not have used.
Booking rule (2026)
Eryri National Park says Pen y Pass stays on a pre-booking system until 1 November 2026. Book on JustPark. The park’s published prices:
- Up to 8 hours: £25
- 8–12 hours: £35
- Full day: £45
Independent walking guides put capacity around 68 cars. Weekends sell out.

If you cannot get a bay
Use Nant Peris or Llanberis and the Sherpa bus up to Pen y Pass. Drop-off at Pen y Pass is allowed; blocking the turning circle is not. Have boots on before you arrive.
Do not park on the A4086 up the pass. The park and the police treat it as an obstruction. Cars get towed.
Before you walk
- Weather. Summit conditions are not the Llanberis car park. If the forecast is bad, abort on the valley floor. The booking fee is cheaper than a rescue.
- Fitness and daylight. These are mountain paths. Winter afternoons run out of light.
- Hafod Eryri (the summit building) follows train and weather. Do not plan the day around a café that may be shut.
Town walking chapters sit under things to do — start at walking in Llanberis and the Llanberis guide.
