How Welsh councils set taxi fares
Each of the 22 local authorities in Wales sets a maximum metered tariff for hackney carriages licensed in their area. This tariff is the most you can be charged on the meter — drivers may charge less, but not more.
What the tariff contains
A typical tariff table has three or four rate bands:
- Tariff 1 — weekday daytime
- Tariff 2 — evenings and weekends
- Tariff 3 — late night and public holidays
Private hire is different
Private hire operators set their own prices. You agree the fare when you book. The council tariff does not apply to private hire vehicles.
See town pages under Taxi fares and our Sources list for council tables.
