The Severn Crossing has no toll

You do not pay a toll to drive into Wales on the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge or the M48 Severn Bridge. The tolls were removed on 17 December 2018. There is no booth to stop at. Do not stop on the bridge.

What ended

Until December 2018, drivers paid to cross. That charge has gone. You do not need coins, a tag, or an account for the crossing itself. GOV.UK announced the end of the tolls. The bridges are still the way in. The payment is not.

What did not end

Cardiff at the other end

Old advice

Pages that still tell you to pay at Aust or to budget a Severn toll are out of date. Drive across. The thing to budget is fuel, time, and whatever the road signs say on the Welsh side.

After the bridge

The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and the M48 Severn Bridge are both toll-free. You do not choose a booth lane. Stay with the traffic. The old toll plazas are gone as a payment point. Treat any page that still lists a tag or a cash price as out of date.

Once you are in Wales, the next rules are the road signs, not the missing booth. The 20mph default is one of those signs, on the roads where it applies. A taxi that collected you in England keeps the licence it started with. If you booked it, the quote is the fare. If you hail a Cardiff hackney later, that is a Cardiff meter, not a bridge charge.

Do not add a toll line to a cottage invoice, a visitor levy, or an airport car. Those are different bills, and the crossing is not one of them. If an old page still lists a tag or coins, ignore the price and drive across.
