Tree work in Wales: ask before they cut

A tree surgeon can quote the cut. A conservation area, or a tree preservation order, can still need the council before anyone starts the saw. There is no official Welsh day rate for tree work.

The quote

Ask what is included: the cut, the climb, the chipping, and who takes the timber. Get it in writing before they travel. A price after a storm, shouted from a van, is not that quote. See a builder’s quote in Wales for the same habit on a building job — scope first, then money.

If the branches will leave in a skip on the road, that may need a highway permit as well. See a skip on the street needs a permit.

Protected trees

You cannot always fell a tree because it is on your land. A tree preservation order, or a tree in a conservation area, can need the council’s consent or a notice period. The rules are explained on GOV.UK. The decision sits with the council that covers that address. Check before the saw starts. A flyer is not that consent.

Some work is exempt — dead trees, in some cases, or small cuts described in the guidance. Do not guess the exemption. Ask the council if you are unsure. Cutting first and asking later is how people get enforcement, not a cheaper job.

Whose tree

The surgeon cuts what they are hired to cut. Whose land, and whose permission, is your question to settle first. A neighbour’s tree over the fence is not automatically yours to remove. Do not let a storm quote skip that.

After the work

Agree what is left: stumps, logs, a clear lawn, or a pile. Keep the quote and any council reply together. The trades pages are where to start looking in a town. They are not a licence to cut.

Ask the council before the date

Phone or write to the council that covers the address. Ask whether the tree has a preservation order, and whether the garden sits in a conservation area. If either is yes, ask what you must send before anyone climbs. Do not let the surgeon book the crane for tomorrow while that answer is still open.

A storm-damaged tree can still be protected. “It looks dangerous” is a reason to ask quickly, not a reason to skip the ask. If the council says emergency work is allowed, get that in writing or in an email you can keep.

There is no official day rate. The written scope — cut, chip, timber, and the council reply — is the job. Do not book the saw for a protected tree until that reply is in writing.
