Bangor Cathedral (founded in the 6th century, rebuilt over centuries) is the oldest cathedral in continuous use in Britain — quiet and surprisingly impressive for a modest-sized city. Garth Pier (19th century, the second longest in Wales at over 1500 feet) extends into the Menai Strait and is free to walk. Treborth Botanic Garden (University of Wales, free entry most days) is a calm wooded garden overlooking the Strait — underrated. Penrhyn Castle (National Trust, 4 miles east) is a monumental Victorian neo-Norman castle with extraordinary interiors and estate gardens.
