Porthcawl has seven beaches: Rest Bay (Blue Flag, surfing), Trecco Bay, Sandy Bay, Coney Beach (amusement park), Newton (dogs year-round), Sker Beach (20 minutes' walk from Rest Bay), and Southerndown. The Kenfig National Nature Reserve (3 miles northeast) has the most impressive sand dune system in Wales — rare orchids, grazing ponies, a designated lake. Merthyr Mawr Warren (3 miles east) is an SSSI dune system with the highest sand dune in Wales. The Wales Coast Path runs through town and connects to Ogmore-by-Sea and the Heritage Coast.
