Powis Castle & Garden (National Trust) is the continuously inhabited Welsh castle with Baroque terraces and a serious armoury — about 1 mile south of town. The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway runs 9 miles of narrow-gauge steam through the Banwy Valley. Montgomery (about 9 miles south) is a quieter Georgian square and ruin.

This is mid-Wales commerce + castle, not visitor-west Powys (Brecon, Hay, Crickhowell, Machynlleth).
