Portmeirion is not a castle pass

Portmeirion is a private village on its own peninsula, below Porthmadog. You pay the operator to enter. Cadw membership does not open the gate. National Trust membership does not open it either.

What you are buying

The point of the visit is the village itself — the buildings, the paths, the coast edge. It is not a Cadw castle, and it is not a National Trust house that your card already covers. See Cadw vs National Trust. Holding one of those cards is useful at their sites. It is not useful at this gate.

We do not publish a ticket price here. The village changes bands and packages. Check portmeirion.wales on the day. A leftover figure from a blog is how people arrive with the wrong cash and the wrong expectation.

Where it is

Use the village directions, not the high street in Porthmadog. The town is the nearest door. The village is a separate drive onto the peninsula. A photo stop at the gate is not free entry. If the sign says entry is charged, that is the rule.

What else people confuse it with

Harlech and Criccieth are different places, with their own tickets if you go there. A day that includes Portmeirion and a castle needs two plans. Do not leave the cottage assuming one pass covers both.

If you are staying in the area, the stay’s pet rules and the village’s entry rules are also separate. One yes does not imply the other.

The gate is the product

People arrive with a Cadw card, a National Trust card, or a “we are only walking through for a photo” plan. None of those is entry. If the board says the village is charged, pay or do not go in. We do not print a price here because the operator changes it. Use portmeirion.wales on the day you go.

The hotel and cottages inside the estate, if you have booked them, are a stay. Day visitors still use the day ticket unless the booking says otherwise. Ask when you book, rather than assuming a room key opens the gate for friends who arrive later.

Porthmadog is the nearest town. The peninsula road is the way in. A castle elsewhere in Gwynedd is a second ticket and a second drive. Check the village site for today's entry before you leave Porthmadog, and do not arrive holding only a Cadw or National Trust card. The gate will still charge. If you have booked a room on the estate, ask whether day visitors with you need their own tickets that day. The village price is on the operator site, not on a castle pass you already hold.
