Rainy-day Cardiff with prices

St Fagans and National Museum Cardiff are free national museums. Cardiff Castle is paid and is not a Cadw site. A hackney from the centre starts at £3.50. Agree the fare if you leave the city boundary.

A wet day in Cardiff is a cost problem before it is a list problem. Visit Wales already owns “things to do in Cardiff.” The useful version is: what is free, what you pay, and how you move between them without standing in Queen Street.

Free indoor (confirm opening hours)

  • National Museum Cardiff (Cathays Park) — Amgueddfa Cymru, free entry.
  • St Fagans National Museum of History — also Amgueddfa Cymru, free entry. It is a few miles west of the centre; budget time and a bus or a taxi, not a hop across the Hayes.
Free means the ticket. Café, shop and any ticketed exhibition are extra. Check museum.wales on the morning, not a screenshot from last year.

Paid, and easy to mix up

Cardiff Castle is independent. It is not Cadw. Cadw membership does not cover it. If the castle is the plan, buy their ticket.

Indoor paid options in the Bay (for example Techniquest) publish their own prices — check the operator, not a round-up blog.

Moving around

Cardiff Central is a short walk from the castle and the museum. St Fagans is not. A hackney from a rank uses Cardiff Council’s meter: £3.50 flag, then distance and waiting. See how much is a taxi in Cardiff. A private-hire app is a quote, not that table.

In heavy rain the rank is slower and the meter picks up waiting. That is the tariff working, not a surprise extra.

A simple wet-day order

1. Museum in town if you are already central. 2. St Fagans if you have a half day and a way back. 3. Castle only if you have decided to pay. 4. Food: look for the hygiene sticker on the door — in Wales display is law. See food hygiene ratings are law in Wales.
