What to know
camping in Bangor
Bangor is the university city on the Menai — Gwynedd taxi table; steep streets and pier, not a holiday harbour like Caernarfon.
Where to stay
Bangor is a working city rather than a holiday resort, and its accommodation reflects that — chain hotels and city-centre guesthouses serving university visitors, NHS staff, and conference delegates. The Quay Hotel (if checking current options) and Hotel Ty Newydd give a flavour of the range. Self-catering is relatively affordable compared with Llandudno or Caernarfon.
For visitors using Bangor as a base, the train connections are excellent: Holyhead (30 min), Chester (1 hr 10 min), and a direct service to London Euston (3 hrs) mean you can stay here and day-trip widely. Parking in Bangor city centre is pay-and-display; Gwynedd free-parking rule (6pm–8am) helps for evening arrivals.
Gwynedd Visitor Levy decision announced after 24 September 2026; earliest start if adopted is October 2027. No levy applies now.
