What to know
camping in Caernarfon
Caernarfon is the walled harbour town under the royal castle — Gwynedd taxi table; Menai and the Welsh Highland Railway, not Bangor’s student streets.
Where to stay
Caernarfon has a compact accommodation offering with guesthouses and small hotels clustered near the castle and along the waterfront. Victoria Dock (Doc Fictoria) is the smartest area for waterfront stays with strait views. Staying inside or adjacent to the walled town puts you within walking distance of the castle, quayside, and Galeri arts centre.
Driving visitors should know: Gwynedd Council's car parks are free 6pm–8am daily, so evening arrivals avoid parking charges. The Balaclafa and Shell Site long-stay car parks (both off Seiont Road/quayside area) charge £5 for 24 hours — among the cheapest day-rate parking for a UNESCO World Heritage site town in the UK.
Gwynedd Visitor Levy decision after 24 September 2026; earliest October 2027 if adopted. No levy currently.
