Walking and outdoors
The Barmouth Viaduct (wooden railway bridge over the Mawddach, 820m long) is one of the most photogenic rail crossings in Britain — watch trains cross from the quayside or walk the pedestrian portion. The Mawddach Trail follows the disused railway line from Barmouth to Dolgellau (9.5 miles, flat, accessible, cycle-friendly) alongside the estuary — arguably the finest flat riverside walk in Wales. Dinas Oleu (National Trust) is the headland immediately above the town — a 30-minute steep climb rewards with panoramic views of the bay.
