Things to do

Hirwaun's headline experience is the Tower Colliery Zip Wire (Rhigos mountain, managed by Zip World, 01248 601444) — two linked zip wire rides starting from the summit of Mynydd Rhigos over Llyn Fawr reservoir and down to the Tower Colliery headframe below, the last deep coal mine in South Wales to close (2008). Llyn Fawr has yielded Bronze Age metalwork hoards of national importance. The Hirwaun Ironworks site (1757) was reputedly the first coke-fired blast furnace in South Wales, predating Merthyr Tydfil's works.
