What to know

Porthmadog is the cob-and-harbour town at the Glaslyn — Gwynedd taxi table; Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland railways, not Tenby’s walled resort.

Walking and outdoors

Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways are the twin headline attractions. Portmeirion (the Italianate village built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis) is 2.5 miles east and deserves at least half a day; advance tickets are recommended in summer. The Glaslyn estuary is excellent for birdwatching — oystercatchers, egrets, and herons are common at low tide along the Cob embankment. The Cob itself (the embankment carrying the railway and road south of the town) offers a flat waterfront walk with mountain views.
