What to know

Walking and outdoors

The Mynydd y Gwair moorland ridge (south of the town) gives open hilltop walking with views across the Ely Valley and toward the Bristol Channel. The Llynfi Valley Walk (west, toward Maesteg) follows the river through broadleaved woodland that has re-established since the last collieries closed. The Llantrisant Common (3 miles east, 2-mile loop) is accessible grassland with good views south over the M4 corridor to the Vale of Glamorgan.
