Yr Wyddfa: railway, Sherpa, or walk
Source: Sherpa’r Wyddfa sample fares · Checked: 2026-09-08 · Wales
You can reach Yr Wyddfa three ways. Walk. Ride the Sherpa bus. Take the Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis. They are three products. A car-park booking is not a train ticket. A train up is not a promise of a ride down.
Walk from Pen y Pass
The Pyg Track and the Miners’ Track start at Pen y Pass. In the main season that car park is pre-book only. The A4086 verge is not a spare plan. Read Pen y Pass: Snowdon without wasting the day before you drive.
The Llanberis Path is a different start. It leaves the town, near the railway station, not the pass. Do not arrive in Llanberis and expect the Pyg Track to begin at the high street.
The Sherpa
Sherpa’r Wyddfa is the bus around the mountain. Sample 2026 fares on sherparwyddfa.wales: £3 for an adult single to Pen y Pass from any Sherpa stop, and £5.50 for a return or day ticket. Children aged 5 to 15 pay £1. Check the operator on the day — a sample page is not a locked tariff.
The bus does not climb the path for you. It gets you to the start, and back to a town, if you catch the last one you planned for.
The railway
The Snowdon Mountain Railway runs from Llanberis. It is a paid ride, booked on snowdonrailway.co.uk, not a Cadw site and not included in a Sherpa day ticket.
Wind can stop it. The operator tells hikers to be ready to walk down. If the train cannot return, the path is the way off the mountain. Do not plan a day that only works if the carriage is waiting at the top.
Which one to pick
- Short on time, starting in Llanberis — railway up, and a plan to walk down if the train does not run.
- Already at a Sherpa town, no Pen y Pass space — bus to the pass, then the Pyg or Miners’ Track.
- You want the path itself — walk, and treat the bus or the train as a separate ticket.
Before you leave the house
Check the weather for the summit, not only for Llanberis. Cloud on the path is normal. A clear morning does not lock the afternoon. If you are using the Sherpa, note the last bus from the stop you need, and leave time to walk down to it. The day ticket does not hold a seat on a full bus.
If you are driving to Pen y Pass and the slot is gone, do not switch to the railway in your head and still drive to the pass. The railway starts in Llanberis. The walking pages are the town door for paths. They are not a booking for the train or the bus.
Take a way down that does not depend on the carriage. Water, a layer, and a torch if you are late. The mountain does not keep the café open because your ticket said return.
