Cardiff Castle is not a Cadw site

Cardiff Castle is not Cadw. A Cadw membership or Explorer Pass does not open the castle gate. Buy a castle ticket from the castle if that is the plan.

Cardiff Castle sits in the city centre. It is not a Cadw site. A Cadw membership, or a Cadw Explorer Pass, does not open the gate. Buy a castle ticket from the castle if that is the plan.

Three gates people mix up

  • Cardiff Castle — independent operator, paid entry, own website. Not on the Cadw admissions list.
  • Cadw nearby — Castell Coch and Caerphilly Castle are Cadw. A Cadw ticket or membership is for those sites, not for the castle in the civic centre.
  • National museums — St Fagans National Museum of History and National Museum Cardiff are Amgueddfa Cymru sites. Entry to the national museums is free. St Fagans is west of the centre. It is not a substitute walk if the castle ticket is the thing you wanted.
National Trust membership does not cover Cardiff Castle either. See Cadw vs National Trust.

What to do with the day

If the castle is the aim, use the castle’s own booking page and its own hours. If you want a free indoor hour, the national museum in the centre is a different building and a different ticket — none. If you want a Cadw castle, go to a Cadw castle.

A wet-day list for the city, with what is free and what is paid, is in a rainy day in Cardiff. The Cardiff visitor guide is the town door, not a castle pass.

Price

We do not publish a leftover castle price here. The operator changes bands. Check the castle site on the day you go. Do not add a Cadw adult figure to a Cardiff Castle plan — that number belongs to Cadw sites such as Conwy Castle.

Castell Coch is the nearby Cadw castle

If the day was “a castle near Cardiff on the Cadw pass”, that is more likely Castell Coch or Caerphilly than the castle in the city centre. Check the Cadw admissions list before you queue at the civic centre gate and argue with the membership card.

St Fagans is free and large. It will use a half-day. It will not stamp a Cardiff Castle ticket, and the castle will not accept a museum wristband. Pick one paid gate if time is short.

The rainy day Cardiff note is the better list for what is free indoors. Use the castle site only if the castle is the plan. If the membership card is the reason you came, use a Cadw site instead and keep the civic centre castle for another ticket. Castell Coch and Caerphilly are the Cadw choices nearby. The city castle still needs its own booking if you want to go inside the paid gate.

No. St Fagans National Museum of History is an Amgueddfa Cymru site with free entry. It is west of the centre. The castle is in the city centre and is paid.
Does National Trust membership cover Cardiff Castle?
No. National Trust and Cadw are different organisations, and Cardiff Castle is neither.
